“A country withno documentaryis just like a family has no photo album.” Guzman, a Chilean documentary filmmaker, used these words to explain the role of documentaries in portraying the spirit of the times and preserving group memories.Documentary is a good carrier of traditional culture. In today's globalized world, documentaries play an important role in cultural communications between countries. Language barriers between countries make the translation of subtitles of documentaries inevitable. This paper discusses the translation characteristics of language, culture and communication in the subtitle translation of the BBC documentary Frozen Planet from the perspective of eco-translation theory, and puts forward the corresponding translation strategy.
