This paper mainly focuses on analyzing ToniMorrison’s Tar Baby to discuss the phenomenon thatconfronting American white culture and suffering from cultural trauma, Black Americans’loss of and search for self-identity and collective identity.

It is preliminarily divided into three parts—introduction,main body and conclusion.

Introduction mainly includes introductionto Toni Morrison and her forth novel TarBaby, literature review and a brief description of Lacan’s mirror stagetheory and trauma theory of psychoanalytic theory.
