The plot of "Lord of the Flies" by William Golding is an example of how misguided authority and blind obedience to tradition can create societies filled with inhumane cruelties; a mob mentality enables a society's leaders to do anything, even commit murder. In the novel, callous authority and blind obedience to that authority combine to create a brutal society. Coincidentally, according to Milgram Stanley, the perils of obedience also happen in his experiment. Is the power of a situation stronger than the character or personality traits of those involved? To what degree do the surroundings shape the characters and their action? This thesis is about to find answers to the above questions.
