Thepaper tries to analyze how Toni Morrison, the author of Song of Solomon, demonstrates the root-seeking culture of African Americans in a magic realistic way. The paper will be divided into three parts. The first part briefly analyzes the old tale of “flying blacks” and its magic realistic connection with the root of American blacks. The second part uses specific examples to illustrate the combination of Milkman’s root-seeking journey and magic realistic technique. In the last part, the paper is going to discuss the function of magic realism in root-seeking literature and intends to discuss the identity and situation of African Americans in the contemporary society.
