Toxic masculinity, contrast to “real” masculinity, refers to certaincultural norms for men that are harmful to society. Traditional gender biaslike male hegemony, which is typically revealed and strengthened by the saying“boys will be boys” during the socialization of boys, is considered “toxic” asit promotes violence that is directed both towards women (eg. sexualharassment) and other men (eg. wars). Related masculine traits includingemotional repression partly induce psychological disorder in men. In short,toxic masculinity sucks for everyone.

Amid the surge of white-collar occupation, men are losing theirdominance in the family, workplace and other fields, which urges the halfpopulation to review their identity and redefine their values. Yet relateddiscourse evidence has been found to play a huge role in maintaining the statusquo and further reinforce the toxic prejudices in the new media era. The authoremploys critical discourse analysis, as the research methodology in the presentpaper, to investigate into the language features of toxic masculinity discourseand its correlation with gender bias. The whole process of discourse analysiswill be made from three aspects: 1) to describe the formal features of toxicmasculinity discourse; 2) to interpret the conceptual distribution of toxicmasculinity in the new media; 3) to explain the constructed relationshipbetween toxic masculinity discourse production and social context.
