A Dream of Red Mansions is recognized as the pinnacle of Chineseclassical novels, which is an encyclopedia of Chinese feudal society. Theachievements of A Dream of Red Mansions are mainly depicted thegroup of distinct and vivid characters. There are more than 480 people with namesand surnames in the novel, which cost Cao Xueqin a lot of efforts. Everycharacter's name has abundant and profound meanings, which not only has thefunction of appellation, but also implies the fate and image of the character. Itis an onerous task to translate these names accurately and vividly in Englishand make English readers acquire the same amount of semantic information andthe same artistic feelings as Chinese readers.

Based on the perspective of translation aesthetics, this paper takes Yang Xianyi's and Hawkes's translation versions of ADream of Red Mansions as examples to explore the strategies and methods oftranslating the names of people in A Dream of Red Mansions into English.
