TheAnalects, one of the Confucian classics, embodies Confucius’ political views,ethical thoughts, moral concepts and educational principles. Through the ages,it has been highly respected by numerous scholars, and the study of it hasnever stopped. With the wide spread of the Analects, many English translationswith their own characteristics appeared at home and abroad. Because theknowledge system and knowledge background of translators are different, theirversions are also unique. Up to now, most of the comparative studies on theAnalects are those of domestic scholars and those of foreign scholars. In eventwo Chinese translations, their styles are different. Taking the translation ofthe Analects by Xu Yuanchong and Gu Hongming as an example and taking Skopostheory as the theoretical basis, this paper makes a comparative study of thetwo versions. And this paper analyzes the translation characteristics of twotranslators and the advantages and disadvantages of the two versions.
