For decades, TheLord of the Rings trilogy has been regarded as one of the most successfulfantasy works in the world. The enduring popularity of the novels and theincreasing critical acclaim, as well as the great influence of the author,J.R.R. Tolkien, have inspired more and more contemporary writers to devotethemselves to the creation of fantasy literature, such as George R.R. Martin and J.K.Rowling.
Among these,Tolkien’s theory of Secondary World from On Fairy Stories is thefundamental conception supporting the monumental story. Therefore, the task ofthis paper is to study the origin, characteristics and associated developmentof the theory and base on them to explore the symbolism and realisticsignificance of the “Secondary World (Arda)” in The Lord of the Rings according to the text, and then try to find out the real meanings of fantasyliterature.
