This paper focuses on the analysis of the theme of scapegoat in American writer Shirley Jackson's short story "The Lottery". Harboring a belief "lottery in June, corn be heavy soon", the villagers held an activity that whoever selected a paper with a black spot on it would be thrown to death with stones. Hence, someone would be the victim or scapegoat every year. In order to insightfully analyze the scapegoat in this novel, this paper will discuss four aspects about the scapegoat in this novel--the necessity of the scapegoat's existence, the process of selecting the scapegoat, the solution to tackling the scapegoat and the subsequent outcome. Thereafter, the satirized social phenomena and the themes concealed behind them can be deeply revealed.
