Since the 1990s, the cultural turn has become a new trend in translation studies, which no longer consider translation as an isolated phase of conversion between languages, but the communication between different cultures. Accordingly, there emerged new translation strategies such as “translation is rewriting” put forward by Lefevere and domestication and foreignization by Venuti. Under such a tendency, the cross-cultural experiences of translators have a great impact on their translation strategies.
In 2015, the Three-body Problem won the Hugo Award for Best Novel and its author, Liu Cixin became the first Asian writer who won the highest award in the science fiction scene, causing a big splash on China and English-speaking countries alike. The story, set in China during the Cultural Revolution and interspersed with the virtual world in ancient China, was full of Chinese elements in the text, posing a great challenge to its translator. Surprisingly, Ken Liu’s perfect English translation of the Three-body Problem was highly recognized among English-speaking readers. As a Chinese American, Ken Liu’s peculiar experiences have an inevitable influence on his translation strategies.
From the perspective of the cultural turn, the thesis, mainly taking Ken Liu’s translation of the three-body problem and Folding Beijing as instances, explores how diverse cultural experiences influence a translator’s choice of translation strategies and demonstrates that the cross-cultural experiences of translators play an important role in the translation practice. At the same time, it can serve as a reference for translators devoted to promoting the quality of foreign translations of Chinese literary works.
