As a special language phenomenon,humor widely exists everywhere.It is charming,full of wisdom ,and has special pragmatic effects in interpersonal communication.Humor can reduce pressure,regulate interpersonal relationship and improve the life quality.In the recent years,along with the popularity of Internet,a large number of overseas TV plays appear in domestic media.Through its unique cultural atmosphere and humor,British and American TV series get the interests and favorites of the mass.

Based on the research background of humor study,this thesis takes TV seriesDownton Abbey andFriendsas data.Firstly,this thesis will make an empirical analysis and explore the production mechanism and the process of cognitive comprehension of British and American verbal humor. Subsequently, the thesis gives an explanation to the above humor differences from perspective of cultural,historical and geographical factors.Lastly,it further explains the rhetorical methods and unique features ,and helps us deeply appreciate the charm of them and improve our ability of understanding and applying.

1. Search various resources to identify the topic for the dissertation.

2. Collect data and materials for the dissertation and write the paper on schedule.

3. 3. The paper should give an elaborate and exhaustive research on the given topic with independent work.
