Opaque meaning is ubiquitous in any natural language and how to construe it is paramount in communication. Implicature, as one of the most salient pragmatic phenomena, has been attracting the attention of many linguists, especially pragmaticists.
As a kind of art with complex semiotic systems, film communication is characterized by semiotic complexity and double-layeredness (Louisa Desilla.2011): on the horizontal level takes place the communication among the film characters while on the vertical level lays the communication between the screenwriters and the audience. The filmPulp Fictionby Quentin Tarantino is a famous works congested by distinctive and chewy verbal and non-verbal semiotic resources. Thus the construal of implicature in the polysemiotic context plays a pivotal role in grasping the underlying messages in film communication and the translations of the subtitles.
Based on relevance theory, film studies and multimodality, this case-study attempts to explorethe semiotic complexity of film communication and the construal and functions of the implicatures by analyzing both the verbal and nonverbal cinematic signifiers. The thesis is designed to give answers mainly for the following questions: What are the film implicatures? What makes the implicatures? What functions do the implicatures play in the film? How are the implicatures conveyed or what are the mediums?
