According toEnglish Curriculum Standards for Compulsory Education (2017), natural and normative pronunciation and intonation will lay a good foundation for effective communication. Yet it is noticeable that compared with the counterparts in urban areas, the current middle school students in rural areas have more problems and difficulties in English pronunciation due to the shortage of high-quality teachers, the backward teaching methods, the restricted language learning environment and the lack of parents’ supervision. Although there is some research about oral English for middle school students, the study mainly aims to explore oral English learning problems and teaching strategies based on oral communicative competence and teaching methodology, principally focusing on teachers rather than students. This research will shift the focus to students and explore English pronunciation problems of middle school students in rural China based on the knowledge of phonetics and the second language acquisition.

This paper analyzes problems inEnglish pronunciation acquisitionfor rural middle school students by utilizing the recording test as well as case interviews, attempting to explore the causes of the problems to provide effective solutions. The thesis means to analyze the pronunciation problems from two main perspectives of segmental features and suprasegmental features. Finally, the reasons and countermeasures will be discussed from the perspectives of parents, teachers, schools, and students.
