With a strong female consciousness, Amy Tan shapes the image of American male in contrast with Chinese male. The Chinese male characters play an ugly, evil and impotent role in her works that is completely different from the upright role of American male characters, and also the Chinese male in Chinese traditional culture. This paper aims to analyze the shaping of Chinese and American male characters in The Joy Luck Club from the aspects of the engrained Chinese traditional ideology, the impacts of American mainstream culture and the awakening of female consciousness.
