As one of the greatest works of Theodore Dreiser, the novel An American Tragedyhas received much attention from critics since its publication. The focus of the discussion has been on the causes of Clyde Griffiths’ tragedy. In other words,some critics emphasize the external social context which has exerted a negative influence on his growth while others also explore his inner dispositional defects with the help of psychoanalysis. Scholars have also applied feminism, naturalism, and realism to discuss the features of this novel. Among all thesepreceding studies, few have given enough attention to the significant action—lyingthat has repeatedly appearedinalmost every part of this novel .
As an influential Church Father in western history, St. Augustine has devoted two treatises inthe notion of lying, On Lying and Against Lying. In these works, he has successfully established a theoretical framework of lying which consists of the definition of lying, the categorization of lying, and the harm of lying. This paper aims to apply the theory of lying of St. Augustine to analyze important narrations of lying in An American Tragedy. This paper will categorize lies, explain their harmfulness, and discusshow these lies have helped the development of the plot as well as the characterization in this novel. Through analyzing the novel, this paper attempts to emphasize that deception is rife in American society at that time. Furthermore, this paper argues that the prevalence of dishonesty is the tragedy of America that Dreiser has intended to present.
